THE PROJECT

Qatar Academy at Al-Wakra is a grade K-12 school of around 48,000 m2 and comprises of teaching clusters. Six buildings connected together and with independent Energy Center housing a water tank and sub-station - teaching clusters and energy center are two-story buildings. Additionally, a 10,000 m2 recreation center plus two libraries at the third level over a connector between two buildings and partially extending over both.
Total surface area of all tilt-up walls is around 96,068 m2.
Habib & Associates, Inc. had structurally designed the complete structural system except for the steel floor of the teaching clusters, which was designed by a separate steel supplier.Â

CHALLENGE AND SUCCESS FACTORS

Habib & Associates, Inc., as the structural engineers and specialty engineers, during the re-design and build phase, worked on the project design team, and managed to capitalize on the strong features and characteristics of the tilt-up system to adapt it successfully to the footprint of the different parts of the project, particularly the relatively geometrically, multi-space, complex recreation center.

The challenge was the tight schedule during which we had to exercise serious coordination effort with all trades to make the site work is not delayed.

Building the STRUCTURE on Tekla helped Habib & Associates, Inc. meet their goal of producing a zero defect product, made checking the production shop drawings easy and helped produce the production shop drawings for almost all the tilt-up wall panels.
