Re-development of the prestigious Curragh Racecourse
Re-development of the Curragh Racecourse including a new centrepiece spectator grandstand for the most prestigious horse racing venue in Ireland.
The Curragh Racecourse Redevelopment is the creation of world class facilities on a par with the best anywhere in the world. The centrepiece of the redevelopment is a major new grandstand which incorporates five-star corporate facilities, restaurants, bars and superb spectator viewing facilities. The new arrivals and reception area incorporate a museum to celebrate the history of racing in Ireland and the contribution Ireland has made to the sport worldwide.
The new parade ring ensures that more patrons can share in the excitement and build up to the racing. And all this while retaining the unrivalled atmosphere and unique spirit of the Curragh. The role of the company is design, detailing, fabricating, fire-painting and erection of the main grandstand roof structure, with the very first 45-metre cantilever in Ireland.
Â
What were the challenges and what made the project successful
Extremely complex roof geometry paired with very restrictive deflection and construction tolerances. BIM and Tekla Structures software enabled the detailing to be precisely and concisely considered in the model and fabrication drawings.
Â
What benefits utilizing BIM and Tekla Software brought to the project
Using BIM, Tekla Software and Trimble Connect was of huge benefit because it was easy to bring in and use the engineer’s model as a background reference. Tekla makes it easy to work with buildings that have a curve, as it was at the Curragh Racecourse. The StruMis Tekla plugin has been used to create fab packages as several components were downloaded from the Tekla Warehouse.
Â
The project in numbers
1100 tons of structural steel (roof trusses, plated members, node connections, bracing, etc.).Â
Single Truss Node connections weighing 30 tons.Â
Grandstand Roof: 180 meters long, 45-meter cantilevers
