Virginia Tech (VT) is a multi-storeyed (12 floors) building constructed in Alexandria, Virginia. It is an innovation campus and each floor is of different shape and size. This is a structurally unique project which required nearly 3000 tons of steel. In addition, a team of 20-members worked on this project for a year.
Challenges
Virginia Tech Innovation Campus is geometrically very challenging. The structure has a glass facade on all sides. The complex multi-plane facades enhance the beauty of the structure while increasing the complexity of the structural members and connections for fabrication and erection.
Benefits of using Tekla
BIM plays an integral part in the construction of this project as the slab edges of the buildings are different on each floor so the seamless coordination between the steel, concrete & glazing was very critical, which was made possible by using Tekla.
