This year marks the 4th year of academia-industry collaboration between TAR UMT and industry partners, Trimble Solutions Malaysia Sdn Bhd, BIM Engineering Solution & Technology Sdn Bhd (PLYTEC) and BSI Services Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
On 16 January 2023, TAR UMT renewed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Trimble, PLYTEC and BSI in Building Information Modelling (BIM) manpower development in line with the government’s call for digitalisation of the construction industry.
TAR UMT also signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Trimble with the sponsorship of ‘Tekla Structure’ and ‘Trimble Connect’ software worth RM2.92 million to TAR UMT. Tekla Structure is a powerful BIM software which enable construction managers and engineers to create, combine, manage and share information-rich accurate 3D models. Trimble Connect is a cloud-based collaboration platform with real time status-sharing. These softwares will be used by our building and construction management students at the Kuala Lumpur Campus and Penang Branch, as well as for training at the Tekla Authorized Training Centre (ATC) in TAR UMT BIM Centre.
BIM Engineering Solution & Technology Sdn Bhd (PLYTEC) is a leading BIM consultant in Malaysia with extensive experience in BIM projects. With their input into TAR UMT curriculum and teaching, the students are exposed with real life examples of BIM projects in the construction industry. Moving forward, PLYTEC will further collaborate with TAR UMT on BIM internship and apprenticeship programmes.
BSI Services Malaysia Sdn Bhd, supports TAR UMT students with up-to-date knowledge and development on international standards for BIM. This initiative allows TAR UMT students to be familiarised with international standards for organisation and digitisation of information about buildings and civil engineering works before they step into the industry.
With the joint efforts from all the three industry partners, TAR UMT students’ knowledge and experience will greatly be enriched through strategically-designed curriculum that gives them a head start on the digital construction in tandem with Construction Industry Development Board’s (CIDB) Construction 4.0 Strategic Plan 2021-2025.
