Krause Gateway Center - 2018 Tekla North American BIM Awards
Krause Gateway Center is the New Corporate Headquarters of Kum & Go; an Iowa-based convenience store chain. Located in downtown Des Moines, Iowa, the 6 story, 163,000 SF building provides a modern and highly collaborative work environment. The building design is centered on lightness, simplicity and openness. The space features abundant natural light and numerous amenities including outdoor work areas, fitness room, game room, a large outdoor patio, green roof and underground parking. Designed by world-renowned firm Renzo Piano Building Workshop, the steel and glass structure is comprised of a glazing system developed specifically for this project. To achieve the transparent and airy look desired by the architect, the floor to floor height was minimized. As a result, approximately 90% of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems are routed through the structural steel requiring approximately 1,400 penetrations. To complicate matters further, the steel was notched to accept and support the glazing system which was designed to strict tolerances and required intricate coordination with deflections (and design camber). The General Contractor (Ryan Companies US, Inc.) held weekly BIM meetings to coordinate HVAC (Baker Group), Plumbing (Baker Group), Electrical (The Waldinger Corporation) and Fire Protection (Summit Companies) to ensure steel penetrations were correctly located prior to fabrication. Without BIM coordination, the process of designing the structure, generating and approving shop drawings, and receiving materials would have been nearly impossible. The result is a paragon of a fully integrated design-to-construction realization of superlative architecture, engineering, fabrication, and construction.
