Steel frame and theming element of the new Croc Drop Ride at Chessington World of Adventure.
What were the challenges and what made the project successful?
The Main steel was sent as an IFC file from the Engineer which we converted and connected using Tekla Structures, the Croc head was imported in 6mm slices at 1200 vertical centres which were sent from the Polystyrene manufacturer as STP files and 3d DWG models, the challenge using these files is the lining up of each part of the model which we did using the Tekla Layout point and a block of concrete. The ride steel and Concrete walls were provided by the Architects IFC file which was used to avoid clashes with the floor support steel etc. Â The site lads did a brilliant job of erecting the steel frame & Head steel where the 3d model came into its own for zooming into some of the connection details. The Polystyrene was themed and painted in our workshops by Studio 43 wherever possible to save time on site only leaving the joints between the blocks to do on site.Â
The project in numbers
The main steel building stands at 4.3 meters tall but 700mm of this is below FFL to allow ducting etc underfloor. Â The Croc Head steel stands 11.8m above the building Parapet giving a total height of 16.1m.
There is 28.6 tonne of hot rolled steel, 13.6 tonne of plate and 450 Kg of cold rolled section to form the ride building roof.
